IMG Legal Action led by BAPIO (British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin)

International Medical Graduates in the UK who are either already in training programmes or those who have passed PLAB and are waiting for jobs are marching in protest of the new change in Immigration rules which requires a work permit for taking up or continuing in a training post. This affects all IMGs and is totally unfair since it comes into effect from July 2006

Name: IMG Protest March
Location: United Kingdom

We are International Medical Graduates, who have passed PLAB, and are trying to get fair treatment. Many of us are already here in the UK and are in training posts, but are being treated unequally

Legal Challenge

Dear Friends, I. Legal Challenge as I see it When doctors came into this country and took their PLAB examinations, they were made to believe that they would have equal opportunities. Regulations where changed suddenly which made it almost impossible to get a training job. Doctors who are already working in this country will not now be able to complete their training. There was no consultation with the stakeholders about ending permit free training. There was no equality impact assessment, which should have been conducted as per race relations act. The regulations were changed suddenly on flimsy grounds that local graduates were not getting jobs. Local graduates who did not get jobs are very small. Department of Health and employers interpreted HSMP visa in such a way as to discriminate against International Medical graduates. Thousands of international medical graduates were affected by these changes. Many have already gone back home with shattered dreams. II. Pledges of Contribution Pledges are encouraging but we still do not have enough pledges to begin a satisfactory challenge. Once we get into it there can be no turning back. III. Please inform your friends and well wishers of this. Encourage them to make pledges. These are my thoughts about the current situation. If you have any further suggestions, you are welcome to make it. We are keen to hear your opinions. We always welcome constructive opinions and criticisms. You may post your pledge openly on indigo with a copy of it to Lakshman - lakshman.raman@ gmail.com I think it is useful to post it in indigo so that it will motivate others. If you want to keep it confidential just sent an email to Lakshman. The details required are: Your nameYour GMC numberYour addressMobile numberAnd the amount you are willing to pledge. Long live BAPIO, Yours sincerely, Dr Satheesh Mathew Honorary General Secretary London Division BAPIO Consultant Paediatrician Newham University Hospital London E13 8SL Email: satheeshmathew2003@yahoo.co.uk
